Scandinavian studies in literature, language or media, or ideally across the boundaries of these areas

A number of PhD scholarships will be announced within the field of Scandinavian studies in literature, language or media, or ideally across the boundaries of these areas. Project applications should include a significant comparative dimension, and hence, on the basis of Danish, focus on language and cultural forms in one or more of the other Scandinavian countries. The scholarships will be established as an element in the promotion of comparative Scandinavian Studies at the Department of Scandinavian Studies and Linguistics.

The research group concerning Digital Communication and Aesthetics focuses on new forms of communication and aesthetic expression in the digital media, for example:

*
The remediation of 'old' media, e.g., the interrelations between television programs and the websites associated with them, digital production and distribution of film, and marketing via the internet;
*
The distinctive features of 'new' media, e.g., computer games and social network sites;
*
The potential of 'emerging' media, e.g., mobile services, ubiquitous computing, and intelligent environments.

Forms of cultural attention

Applications are invited for one or more Ph.D.-scolarships within the research theme Forms of Cultural Attention: In modern information society attention has become a cultural focal point. This applies to visibility sought in quiz and reality shows, on blogs, and by communication consultants. And it applies to unwanted visibility created through electronic surveillance, bugging, and surveys. These forms of attention expose the individual to the gaze of others and differ from attention given to a citizen stating his or hers views in the public and for a political community.

Projects within the research theme should theoretically and analytically investigate how forms of culture shape and comment upon collective attention across frontiers and historical periods. In general projects should contribute to the understanding of how forms of cultural attention focus certain aspects of the world and leave others unattended. Specifically, projects should contribute to the understanding of how artistic practices in the present and in historical perspective have shaped and commented upon cultural attention.

Medieval and/or early-modern Scandinavian textual studies

Applications are invited for PhD Fellowships within the field of Medieval and/or early-modern Scandinavian textual studies. This includes the sociology of texts, textual criticism, scholarly editing and bibliography. The project must involve both theoretical discussion and concrete editorial work, e.g. the production of an electronic edition of one or more texts. Preference will be given to projects which relate to the institute’s established and developing research areas, for example the study of the manuscripts in the Arnamagnæan collection and the study of the Fornaldarsögur Norðurlanda.

Language technology, preferably within the strategic fields: language resources and tools (research infrastructure), cognitive science, knowledge systems and tools for multilinguality

At CST we investigate methods and tools for creation, annotation and exploitation of language resources, in particular for Danish, but also for other languages. In the field of cognitive science we focus on multimodality and within knowledge systems we are investigating ontologies and their contribution to intelligent search algorithms. Multilinguality at CST concerns e.g. statistical machine translation (SMT) and methods for searching multilingual websites

PhD Deformation in thin films

PhD position: Deformation of thin films of NiTi shape memory alloy
Delft, 2628 CD, (Zuid-Holland)

, 40 hours per week Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter

Job description
The PhD student will produce NiTi films in a sputter deposition system at TU Delft. In order to find the conditions for 'good' films, he/she will characterize those films by X-ray diffraction, SEM, TEM and EPMA. In collaboration with researchers at Philips MiPlaza in Eindhoven he/she will transfer NiTi films to a flexible substrate. The real interesting part of the project is the micro-mechanical testing inside the SEM at TU Delft. Here it will become clear whether or not there is a relation between thickness and deformability of the films. The PhD student will perform these tests, analyze the data and propose a model for the observed deformation behavior of thin NiTi films.

Although we have a research plan ready for this project, we are willing to deviate from that plan for a better one. Your research initiatives will be strongly appreciated. We also expect a PhD student to supervise undergraduate students in our group. This research project is part of the FOM-M2I programme Size dependent materials properties, in collaboration with five other Dutch University teams.

Research
NiTi (Nickel Titanium) is a shape memory alloy known for its application in satellite hinges, dental fixtures, and spectacle frames. Only recently NiTi has been prepared as a thin film.

In the present project the suitability of NiTi as metallization for flexible electronics will be investigated. For this application the deformation of NiTi films is of crucial importance. Shape memory metals exhibits pseudo-elasticity. This pseudo-elasticity allows bulk NiTi to be strained reversibly up to 6%.

Other work on thin film metallization for flexible electronics has demonstrated a huge thickness dependence of the 'strain to failure' for gold films. Thin gold films can be stretched far more than thick films, due to the coupling to the flexible substrate.

Requirements
University Graduate
The successful candidate is an experimental scientist who holds a masters degree in physics or materials science, preferably with experience in thin films or advanced analytical techniques. The successful candidate interacts easily with scientists from various disciplines and institutes.

Organization
Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter
Surfaces & Interfaces group (S&I) is part of 'Materials Science and Engineering' (MSE) at TU Delft. The mission of 'Materials Science and Engineering' is to provide novel materials solutions to societal demands. The Surfaces & Interfaces group strives to do so by performing world-class research on coating properties and interactions of the environment with solid surfaces. Examples of present projects are: 'Thermal barriers', 'Corrosion protection' and 'Hard coatings'.

Energy).

Although studying outside ASEAN countries, students under the Doctoral Degree Program in
Japan are encouraged to participate in AUN/SEED-Net’s network activities (e.g.
AUN/SEED-Net Regional Conference, Collaborative Research activities, etc.) so as to create,
maintain, and deepen the linkage with Member Institutions (student’s sending institution and/or
student’s hosting institution when pursued master’s degree).

Qualifications
(1) Applicants must have a research-based master’s degree in relevant engineering field or to be
awarded the master’s degree before starting doctoral degree study.
(2) Applicants should be ranked within top 10% of the class for Bachelor’s Degree, in principle,
(a certified document of class rank is required).
(3) Applicant should have a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3 or more in the 4-scale grading
system or at least 7.5 in the 10-scale grading system, with some English competency.

stage there is no need to submit application form of Japanese Supporting Universities.
(2) The contact person of each sending institution sends a collection of Application Forms
endorsed by the Member Institution to the AUN/SEED-Net Project. Please note that
individual application sent to AUN/SEED-Net Project will not be accepted. However,
Sending Institutions could submit the collection of application forms more than once towards
the Deadline.
(In case of applicants studying overseas, Application Forms as well as other required

the contact person of their respective Sending Institution to submit an endorsement letter to
AUN/SEED-Net.)
(3) The AUN/SEED-Net Project will check all required documents and request missing
documents from applicants through Sending Institutions, if necessary.
(4) The AUN/SEED-Net Project will conduct initial screening and send the results to applicants’
sending institutions. At the same time, the AUN/SEED-Net Project will consult with
concerned Japanese Supporting Universities for possibility of accepting the applicant in the
event that the applicant is awarded a scholarship and passes the entrance examination.
*Applicants are encouraged to contact by themselves a prospective advisor of your
preference at a Japanese Supporting University for consent on acceptance in the event the
applicant is awarded a scholarship and passes the entrance examination. It will be an
advantage in the screening process if the applicant can obtain and enclose such consent letter
(or copy of e-mail communication) from a prospective advisor in this application as it can
fasten the screening process.
(5) After the communication with Japanese Supporting Universities, the AUN/SEED-Net
